vestibular disorder

Common symptoms include:

  • Mild dizziness or unsteadiness, to violent vertigo and falls.
  • A sense of “spinning” with certain head movements or positions.
  • Trouble reading, focusing or watching motion.
  • Feeling unsettled in busy environments like traffic or supermarkets, or in lifts or escalators.
  • Unsteadiness especially in the dark or on uneven surfaces.
  • Nausea, muzzy head, poor concentration, headaches, fatigue, loss of self-confidence.

Causes

Most dizziness and balance problems come from a disturbance of the vestibular apparatus, located in the inner ear, or its connections to the brain.

Inner Ear

How is it Diagnosed?

Functional vestibular testing will objectively establish the source of a vestibular disorder which entails taking a detailed medical history and then using infra-red goggles objectively assessing the vestibular system. A diagnosis is then concluded. Vertigo is not a diagnosis, it is only a symptom.
